Boost Nassau Main Street Recovery Grant Recipient 2022

We are pleased to announce the Children’s Leukemia Research Association, Inc. has been selected to receive a $10,000 grant award through the Boost Nassau Main Street Recovery Grant Program. The Program is dedicated to helping small businesses that experienced financial hardship due to the pandemic.

Through grants and donations, we can support patients like Calvin who was diagnosed with Chronic Myeloid Leukemia. He has received financial assistance from CLRA since his 2013 diagnosis.

In his own words, “I retired twelve and one-half years ago with expectations of traveling, consulting, and completing much needed repairs on my home. Ten months after retiring, my life as a physically fit and as an outgoing senior citizen was dramatically changed, due to being diagnosed with Chronic Myeloid Leukemia (CML).

This scary health condition was emotionally, physically, mentally, and financially challenging. My spiritual grounding has helped me to emotionally and mentally cope. By continuing to exercise, even at a slower pace, has been physically beneficial. The financial challenge, however, as I initially faced CML twelve years ago was overwhelming; even though, I was eligible for Medicare. My out-of-pocket cost for the first three months of oral chemotherapy medication exceeded ten thousand dollars.

My travel and home repair money did not go to Delta Airlines or to Home Depot, but, to a pharmacy! I sought financial assistance from many organizations. My family income always was slightly above the income level to qualify for their grants; yet not high enough to comfortably pay for the high cost of chemotherapy medication.

A few years thereafter, my out-of-pocket cost was about $4,000 annually; a somewhat financial relief. My financial blessing for several years, however, has come from The Children’s Leukemia Research Association (CLRA). Now, most of my yearly out-of-pocket cost has been covered by a reimbursement grant from CLRA. While the funds from CLRA are greatly appreciated, the professional care and concern extended by Tara and other CLRA staff has been quite heartwarming!!! God Bless.”
